A folding window is an innovative fenestration system where multiple window panels are hinged together, allowing them to fold and stack neatly to the side like an accordion. This design creates a dramatic, wide-opening aperture that can essentially transform an entire wall into an open-air space, seamlessly connecting indoor and outdoor areas. It is the window equivalent of a bi-fold door, offering superior ventilation and an unobstructed view when open. When closed, the panels align and lock to form a continuous, well-sealed barrier. Primarily used in residential settings for large openings to patios, gardens, or balconies, it is celebrated for its modern aesthetic, space-saving operation, and ability to maximize natural light and panoramic views.

Material

The construction emphasizes durability and smooth operation for moving large, heavy panels. Frame materials are critical:

  • Aluminum is the predominant choice due to its high strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and ability to support slim profiles for maximum glass area. Modern systems feature thermally broken aluminum for energy efficiency.
  • Wood (hardwood or engineered) or wood-aluminum cladding offers a warm, traditional interior look with aluminum's durability on the exterior.
  • uPVC provides a cost-effective, low-maintenance, and thermally efficient alternative.
    The large glass panels are typically double-glazed insulated units with Low-E coatings. The hardware system is paramount, consisting of robust stainless steel top and bottom tracks, heavy-duty pivot hinges connecting each panel, roller carriages for smooth sliding, and multi-point locking rods integrated into the vertical edges for security and compression sealing.

Design Drawings & Key Components

Design requires precision engineering drawings detailing panel dimensions, stacking clearance, and structural support. Key parts include:

  1. Panels/Sashes: Individual framed glass units.
  2. Hinges (Pivot Sets): Heavy-duty, adjustable hinges connecting adjacent panels, allowing rotation and alignment.
  3. Track System: A top track (often box-shaped) guiding the rollers and bearing most of the weight, and a bottom guide track or floor guide to stabilize panel movement.
  4. Roller Carriages: Wheel assemblies attached to the top of each panel that run in the overhead track.
  5. Master Panel & Locking System: The leading panel operates the system, equipped with a handle that engages multi-point locking bolts (shoot bolts) into the frame and corresponding receivers on intermediate panels (astragal locks) to compress the entire stack tightly when closed.
