A hinged door, the most common door type globally, is defined by its method of attachment: it is mounted to a door frame by one or more hinges (pivoting joints) along its vertical edge. This fundamental design allows it to swing open and closed on a fixed axis. Its primary functions are to provide privacy, security, sound insulation, and climate control by sealing off a doorway. Hinged doors can swing inward or outward (single-acting) or both ways (double-acting, as in saloon doors).
